Furniture returns are less about the deadline and more about the logistics: who moves the item, who pays for the freight, and what condition counts as returnable once you've assembled it. A sofa is not a t-shirt — missing the fine print can cost real money in restocking and pickup fees. Run through this checklist before you buy.
The pre-purchase checklist
- • Check the category window, not the store window. Lowe's and Home Depot both advertise 90 days but limit furniture to 30. Macy's furniture and mattresses are 30 days from delivery. Amazon furniture is 30 days — and must be disassembled and returned in original packaging.
- • Ask about restocking and pickup fees. Macy's charges up to 15% restocking on furniture, and mattress returns carry a 15% fee plus an $85 pickup fee. Kohl's threshold-delivery items incur a 15% restocking fee.
- • Know the mattress rules before you sleep on it. Ikea's "Love It or Exchange It" policy gives you one exchange within 90 days — no cash refund on used mattresses. Walmart requires mattresses back within 90 days in clean, sanitary condition.
- • Keep the boxes until you're sure. Ikea takes unopened items back for a full 365 days but drops to 180 days once opened or assembled. Amazon requires original packaging for furniture, full stop.
The generous outliers
Two stores stand apart. Costco applies its satisfaction guarantee to furniture with no deadline at all — if you're unhappy with a couch a year later, you can bring it back. Ikea's 365-day unopened / 180-day opened structure is the next most forgiving, and it accepts fully assembled furniture within the 180-day window as long as it's clean, complete, and resellable. Target sits in the middle: 90 days standard, but a full year on Target-owned furniture brands.

Amazon
Most items purchased on Amazon can be returned within 30 days of shipment. Exceptions vary by product category, and third-party marketplace seller policies may differ.
Walmart
Walmart offers a standard 90-day return window. Electronics and marketplace items must be returned within 30 days, wireless phones and marketplace electronics/luxury within 14 days, and major appliances within 2 days (not returnable in store). Marketplace items may incur a restocking fee up to 20%.
Target
Target provides a standard 90-day return window. Target Circle Card holders get an additional 30 days (120 days total), and Target owned brands (like Cat & Jack) carry a 1-year guarantee. Electronics and Target Plus items must be returned within 30 days, while Apple products and mobile phones have a 14-day limit. Opened media and airbeds are exchange-only, and gift cards, trading cards, and open breast pumps are final sale.
Costco
Costco offers a 100% satisfaction guarantee with no return deadline for most items. Returns are accepted at any warehouse or online, and return shipping is free for eligible online returns.
Lowe's
Lowe's provides a 90-day standard return window for most items. Major appliances and outdoor power equipment must be returned within 30 days and must be in unused condition with original packaging. Custom-mixed paints and custom orders are non-returnable.
Home Depot
Home Depot has a standard 90-day return window. However, electronics, furniture, tractors, paint sprayers, gas outdoor equipment, and holiday decor must be returned within 30 days. Air conditioners and heaters must be returned within 7 days, and major appliances are restricted to a 48-hour return window from delivery. Proof of purchase is required.
Kohl's
Kohl's offers a 90-day standard return window, which is extended to 120 days for purchases made with a Kohl's Card. Premium electronics, watches, and Sephora at Kohl's items must be returned within 30 days. Baby registry items have a 365-day window. Beverages, trading cards, and open breast pumps are non-returnable. Threshold delivery items are subject to a 15% restocking fee.
Ikea
IKEA allows new and unopened products to be returned within 365 days. Opened items can be returned within 180 days with a receipt and government-issued ID. Mattresses qualify for one exchange within 90 days. Plants, cut fabric, custom countertops, and 'As-Is' products are final sale.
Macy's
Macy's allows returns within 30 days of purchase. Items must be unworn, unwashed, and have all original tags attached. Gently used cosmetics and fragrances are accepted. Holiday purchases made Oct 10 - Dec 25 are extended to Jan 31.
