Category Guide

Beauty is the category where shopper assumptions are most often wrong — in both directions. Plenty of people throw away used products they could have returned, and plenty of others get denied at the counter because they assumed every store takes back opened makeup. Here's the record, myth by myth, for the stores we track.

Myth vs. reality

Myth: "You can't return opened makeup."

Reality: The two beauty specialists are built around the opposite promise. Sephora takes back new or gently used makeup, skincare, and fragrance within 30 days for a full refund (31–60 days for store credit). Ulta accepts gently used products too, with refunds to the original payment inside 30 days and store credit after that. Target, Walmart, Macy's, Amazon, and Nordstrom also accept opened or gently used beauty products within their windows.

Myth: "All stores treat beauty the same as everything else."

Reality: The discount and fast-fashion side is much stricter. Nordstrom Rack only accepts beauty products that are brand new and unopened with safety seals intact, and Zara requires cosmetics and fragrance to be sealed in original packaging. Shein won't take back any beauty product once the hygiene seal is broken.

Myth: "'Gently used' means any amount left in the jar."

Reality: Sephora's working definition is minimal wear with most of the product remaining — roughly half to three-quarters full — and it reserves the right to deny returns on heavily used or empty containers. Both Sephora and Ulta monitor return frequency and can require government ID or refuse serial returners.

Myth: "Mail returns are always free."

Reality: Ulta deducts a $5.99 return shipping fee from mail-in refunds unless the return is Ulta's error. Sephora's prepaid mail label is free, and in-store returns are free everywhere. If you're near a store, walk it in.

Beauty & Cosmetics Policy FAQ

What is the average return window for Beauty & Cosmetics products?
Typically, return windows for Beauty & Cosmetics vary between 14 to 90 days. High-value hardware or designer apparel is usually limited to 14–30 days, while general goods may extend up to 90 or 180 days.
Can I return opened or swatched Beauty & Cosmetics items?
It depends entirely on the store rules. Some retailers allow returning opened items (like Sephora/Ulta for beauty tools and gently used cosmetics, or Target for owned brands). Others (like Apple, Zara, or Shein) strictly forbid returns on opened items or require safety seals intact.
Is a receipt mandatory for returns in Beauty & Cosmetics stores?
While having a proof of purchase is highly recommended, many large department stores can look up transactions using credit card details or digital membership logbooks. Specialty boutiques and clothing labels are more likely to enforce mandatory receipt policies.
Can I return perfume I've sprayed a few times?
At Sephora, Ulta, Nordstrom, and Macy's — yes, gently used fragrance is returnable within their windows (Sephora and Ulta refund in full within 30 days; Macy's window is 30 days; Nordstrom has no set deadline). At Zara, Shein, and Nordstrom Rack, fragrance must be unopened and sealed.
Where can I return Sephora products bought inside Kohl's?
Only at Kohl's. Sephora at Kohl's purchases must be returned to a Kohl's store — stand-alone Sephora locations and Sephora.com cannot process them.
